MUSCAT, OCT 27

Oman is preparing to showcase innovative applications of drones and other Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) technologies across six priority sectors under a national demonstrator programme designed to support the Sultanate's emerging strategy for next-generation aviation.

The Oman AAM Strategic Demonstrator Programme, launched by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), has reached a key milestone following the October 25 deadline for submitting Expressions of Interest (EOIs).

The initiative provides a platform for Omani and international aircraft operators, technology developers, manufacturers and research institutions to demonstrate innovative aviation solutions within a controlled regulatory environment known as the National AAM Sandbox.

Six priority applications have been identified for demonstration: air taxi services, agricultural operations, cargo and delivery logistics, security and surveillance, healthcare and emergency medical services, and aerial imaging and inspection.

These applications highlight the potential for drones and other advanced aircraft to transform passenger mobility, logistics, agricultural productivity, emergency response, public safety and infrastructure monitoring across Oman.

Participating organisations will have opportunities to deploy and test their own aircraft, drones, sensors, payloads and supporting technologies, helping regulators assess their operational feasibility, safety and commercial potential under real-world conditions.

With the EOI submission period now concluded, the programme moves into its evaluation and shortlisting phase. Proposals will be assessed against criteria covering strategic relevance, technological maturity, operational feasibility, safety, innovation and alignment with national AAM objectives.

According to the announced schedule, shortlisted applicants are expected to be notified by November 15, ahead of live demonstrations and trials planned for December 6–10, with the main showcase scheduled for December 8–9.

Significantly, the demonstrator programme represents a practical component of Oman's National Advanced Air Mobility Strategy, currently being formulated by an international consortium headed by GUAMobility.

Appointed by MTCIT in June 2026, in coordination with the CAA and Oman Logistics Center, the consortium is developing a comprehensive roadmap for progressively integrating drones and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft into Omani airspace.

Its mandate encompasses regulatory frameworks, aviation safety, infrastructure requirements, low-altitude airspace management, Unmanned Aircraft Traffic Management (UTM), workforce development and investment opportunities.

GUAMobility's consortium includes Innovitech, DTA International and Oman-based GIS HUB, supported by international specialists in aviation engineering, infrastructure, geospatial technologies and strategic advisory services.

The demonstrator programme will enable regulators and industry stakeholders to evaluate operational requirements, identify regulatory gaps and assess commercially viable applications before wider deployment.
